Bundaberg Rugby League - Round four: Hervey Bay Seagulls vs Eastern Suburbs Magpies

Game 2 of Round 4

We saw the Hervey Bay Seagulls at home take on the first-place Eastern Suburbs Magpies. This game had all the ups and downs of a great contest, with plenty of heat between the two clubs. In the end, Easts came away with the win and continued their unbeaten run.

Hervey Bay once again put up a strong performance and proved tough to beat at home. They played hard, aggressive football throughout the game and looked to have a game plan that troubled the Easts outfit at times. The standout player for me was Tallis Murray, who shut down one edge while also taking tough carries to get the Bay boys out of trouble. In the end, though, they just couldn’t put together a full 80-minute performance, but they showed clear glimpses of being a very competitive team.

Easts looked a little out-enthused early in the contest and seemed slightly shocked. They started out of rhythm and were losing the metreage battle, but the second half was where they lifted to another level. Kyle O’Dwyer caused havoc through the middle, breaking tackles and making plenty of metres, which allowed the likes of Jensen Deamer to capitalise and put the Bay side on the back foot.

They played a much more attacking style in the second half, scoring points down the Seagulls’ right edge. Despite their slow start, they showed why they remain undefeated, putting together a composed and steady performance. They didn’t panic under pressure—instead, they stayed calm, stuck to their game plan, and it ultimately won them the match.

A game that had it all saw a competitive Seagulls side once again fall short at home in a tight contest. Easts were slow to start but dominated in the end with a strong team performance.Easts head into Round 5 still undefeated as they take on Pasts Brothers, while Hervey Bay will host Across The Waves.
