Bundaberg Rugby League - Round Four: Across The Waves Tigers vs Maryborough Wallaroos

Game 1 of Round 4

We saw Across The Waves Tigers host the Maryborough Wallaroos. This was my tip for game of the round-it had all the ingredients to be a cracker-but in the end, Waves were too strong for the Roos outfit.

The Roos were down on a few key troops in this game but still looked to play the direct, hard football they pride themselves on and have shown can work throughout the start of the 2026 season. However, they missed the jump this time around. They were outmuscled early, with Waves piling on 30 unanswered points to take a 30-0 lead into halftime. The likes of Jordan Kemble and Bailey Robertson still played a big role in trying to grind their way back into the contest. They managed to set up a try, with Kemble crossing himself in the second half, but the Waves outfit proved too strong on the day.

Across The Waves Tigers were on fire. They ran riot on the edges of the Roos, with it all orchestrated by the elusive Laish Salam (Peoples Player of the week), who had a hand in many of the tries while also scoring two of his own. They looked to have found some rhythm after a slightly slow start to the year. This performance was more like the Waves team we’ve come to expect over the past few seasons. They played tough, hard football through the middle early, setting the platform for their edges to go to work and dominate out wide. I think we’ll see Waves really explode moving forward this season, and this game showed exactly why they are back-to-back premiers.

The Roos may have been short on players, but overall they also lacked intent. The Waves boys were at their destructive best and laid down a marker as true competition heavyweights. The Roos will head back up to Bundaberg for the third week in a row as they take on the struggling Wests Panthers, while the Waves Tigers will travel down the highway to face Hervey Bay.
